‘The Big Short’ Takes Top Prize at Producers Guild Awards

The 27th Producers Guild Awards took place on Saturday evening. A major pit stop in the Oscar season, the PGA top prize is typically highly predictive over what may prevail in the Best Picture race at the upcoming Academy Awards. Voted on by producers, the PGA top prize is voted on in nearly identical fashion to how the Academy determines Best Picture. The producers ended up choosing The Big Short as their top prize winner, in a somewhat surprising move.

The PGA selected Bridge of SpiesBrooklynEx MachinaMad Max: Fury RoadThe MartianThe RevenantSicarioSpotlight and Straight Outta Compton as their picks for best film of 2015. While the Producers Guild nominates an even ten instead of the Academy’s five to ten (this year the Oscars annointed eight), the only films missing from the eventual Oscar line-up were Ex MachinaSicario and Straight Outta ComptonRoom squeezed in with the Academy.
