On Thursday, The Batman director Matt Reeves gave fans a pleasant and eerie surprise with a deleted scene in which Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader faces off against his famous enemy, the Joker, played by Barry Keoghan. After visiting that secret website with word puzzles posed by another famous villain, the Riddler, played by Paul Dano in the film, the scene became available to fans.
According to Reeves in a February interview with Variety, the scene follows Batman’s revelation that the Riddler had murdered the Gotham City police commissioner, leaving behind another of his enigmatic letters addressed to Batman. Unnerved by the Riddler’s interest in him, Batman begins to investigate the Riddler’s motivations.
While we never get a full, clean shot of Keoghan’s Joker, he certainly gives off a new version of the Joker in Reeves’ Gotham that we haven’t seen before on the big-screen or small-screen. He has scars on his face, bald spots on his head, and scabs on his hands. And, in true Hannibal Lecter fashion, Joker utilizes the chance to play therapist to Batman rather than assisting him in determining who the Riddler is.
