Update: Matt Reeves’ The Batman was recently cleared to be released in China earlier this week and now has a release date of March 18, just two weeks after its planned domestic release on March 4. Warner Bros. Weibo account shared the news and added a new poster to go along with it.
Previous Post: The Batman, the highly anticipated film from Warner Bros./DC, has been approved for release in China, according to Deadline. Although no release date has been set, the approval is noteworthy given the lack of studio titles in the market over the last year.
“Today, I have excellent news for you,” star Robert Pattinson said in a video posted to the Warner Bros. Weibo account, while Zoe Kravitz added, “our new movie, The Batman, will be released in China.” Colin Farrell and Paul Dano also appear in the video.
The Batman, which opens overseas on March 2 and in North America on March 4, is expected to be a dark film, albeit, unlike WB/Joker, DC’s, which was rated R and did not make it into China, this one is certified PG-13.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, which grossed $95.8 million and $106 million in China, respectively. When the market was barely opening up in 2012, The Dark Knight Rises starring Christian Bale, grossed roughly $53 million.
The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves and stars Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. The duo joins forces to take on the nefarious Riddler played by Dano.
