Deadline has exclusively reported that a third Sonic The Hedgehog film has been confirmed from Paramount. The news of the third film comes before the second film’s release, which is coming out on April 8th, 2022.
The Sonic The Hedgehog films are a part of a trend of movies starring video game characters from the 80s and 90s. Other examples of this trend include Detective Pikachu, released in 2019, and the upcoming Super Mario Bros. animated film from Illumination Entertainment which is slated for release on December 21st, 2022. People who grew up with these video game characters are old enough to have children of their own and would likely go see their childhood icon on the big screen.
The first Sonic The Hedgehog film was released on January 25th, 2020. The film starred Ben Shwartz, known for his role as Jean-Ralphio in Parks And Recreation, as the voice of Sonic, Jim Carrey, known for The Truman Show and How The Grinch Stole Christmas, as the villain Dr. Robotnik, and James Marsden, known for his role as Teddy Flood in Westworld, as Sheriff Tom Michael Wachowski, a character that was originally not in the video games.
The cast will return in the sequel alongside Idris Elba, known for The Dark Tower and The Suicide Squad, who will be providing the voice of Knuckles. The introduction of Knuckles in the second film will lead to the character getting his own spinoff series on Paramount Plus.
Both the first and second films are directed by Jeff Fowler, the first film being his directorial debut. Currently, there is no confirmation on who will be returning for the third film, cast or crew, as details are sparse due to the film being in early development.
