Mortal Kombat is undeniably one of the most popular fighting game franchises of all time. Being one of the first games to spark major outrage because of its violence and blood, but also one of the first video games to get a feature film adaptation with some form of success. The first Mortal Kombat movie, while not a massive critical success, has been cited as one of the better video game film adaptations despite having an infamous sequel with Annihilation. However, even with the success of the first film, hardcore fans are still anticipating for a proper adaptation, showcasing more of the over the top violent and action we’re used to. Fortunately, their prays have been answered as the first red band trailer for Mortal Kombat (2021), this time being every bit as insanely over the top as a diehard fan would expect.
The trailer starts with Jackson Briggs, a mercenary on a mission to find the whereabouts of some mysterious powers. Only to come across against Sub-Zero, who in typical Mortal Kombat fashion, rips his arms off. The trailer then showcases some of the other popular characters meeting up with one another to engage in the legendary fighting tournament known as Mortal Kombat. After that, we witness more of these characters showing off their powers and defeating their opponents in incredibly gore-filled ways. The trailer ends with a quick glimpse at Scorpion and Sub-Zero fighting one another, with Scorpion even saying the iconic line, “GET OVER HERE!”.
A new Mortal Kombat film had been in the talks for quite some time, all the back in 2010 when a short film known as Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, was released to a ton of fan acclaim. There were initially talks to create a full length feature version of the short, however the film was plagued with a ton of production issues to the point of development hell. Now with this new one finally seeing the light, it seems to be a very satisfying film for longtime fans of the fighting game franchise. The trailer promises that this film will deliver on the insane brutal violence that the games are known for, which as far as what people want out of a film adaptation of this series, hopefully Mortal Kombat will end up being one of the better video game movies in recent memory.
Mortal Kombat is set for release in Theaters and on HBO Max April 16th 2021
