Tessa Thompson, Zoe Kravitz Among Those Vying for Female Lead in Upcoming Han Solo Spin-off

Details on the upcoming Star Wars spin-off film centering around a young Han Solo are being carefully guarded. As of now all that’s confirmed around Phil Lord and Christopher Miller‘s upcoming prequel is rising actor Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) will star in the role made famous by Harrison Ford and that production is slated to start sometime early next year. Variety, however, reports that under a veil of secrecy measures in shaping the ensemble of the film are being taken. Two roles specifically appear to be currently in the process of testing.

One of those roles – that of the film’s female lead – may come down to rising stars Tessa Thompson (Creed), Zoe Kravitz (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Naomi Scott (The Martian). All three, reportedly, tested for the film in London this past week for what is mystery part for the still untitled feature. Thompson, who can currently be seen on HBO’s Westworld, appeared in the recent hits Selma and Creed and soon appears in Alex Garland’s anticipated science fiction film Annihilation as well as Marvel’s upcoming Thor: Ragnorak. Kravitz, who is currently filming the R-rated comedy Rock That Body, will next be seen in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them while Scott, who appeared in last year’s The Martian and The 33, is currently shooting Power Rangers. An official announcement on who might join Ehrenreich may still take some time, but all three appear in the running.

Also on the agenda for the film is finding a young Lando Calrissian, the part played originally by Billy Dee Williams. Early reports have suggested Donald Glover (Community) may have the upper hand here, but nothing definitive has come out from either Disney nor Lucasfilm. Glover, who appeared recently in Magic Mike XXL and The Martian, is currently headlining the FX original series Atlanta and recently wrapped filming on Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The untitled Han Solo project is expected to hit theaters on May 25, 2018. We will stay tuned for the latest developments.
