Titans Go! The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the teen super team is finally getting a live action film. Teen Titans is set to be a part of James Gunn’s and Peter Safran’s DC Universe. DC Studios has tapped Ana Nogueira to write the film after reading her treatment for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, her feature film writing debut.
The Teen Titans have a storied comic book and television history. Despite an earlier 1960s incarnation (which focused primarily on superhero sidekicks like Robin, Wonder Girl, Kid Flash, and Aqualad), the team did not explode in popularity until 1980’s New Teen Titans series, written by Marc Wolffman and drawn by George Pérez. This series introduced and expanded on characters like Beast Boy, Cyborg, Raven, and Starfire, four of the main Titans seen in extended media.
New Teen Titans was filled with iconic stories and moments including Dick Grayson becoming Nightwing and graduating from his Robin persona, Raven confronting her demon father Trigon, and one of the most iconic DC Comics stories, “The Judas Contract,” which saw a new member of the team betray the Titans. New Teen Titans was, at one time, DC’s number one highest selling comic. While the Titans have continued to be DC Comics mainstays, Wolfman’s and Pérez’s seminal run has inspired many adaptations.
New Teen Titans laid the foundation for 2003’s popular Teen Titans animated series. Teen Titans, an anime inspired action cartoon with particularly memorable theme song, ran for five seasons, adapting many of the most famous Titans stories for a new generation. 2013’s Teen Titans Go!, which still airs on Cartoon Network (and is soon to reach a 400 episode count), has taken the Titans in a more comedic direction, even adapting the team to the screen for the first time with 2018’s Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. Another television series, Titans, brought the team to live action for the first time in a controversial, violent manner . This new film will be the first live action film version of the Teen Titans.
What version of the team will we see on the big screen? Nobody except those at DC Studios know. Until this announcement, the new DCU was only expected to introduce one character who has been a part of the Teen Titans—Robin. The Brave and The Bold, an upcoming film set to introduce the DCU’s Batman, is set to follow Batman as he comes in contact with his son Damian Wayne. Damian is (usually considered) the fourth version of Robin in DC Comics lore, and is the only version to be Batman’s blood relative.
While Damian has had some comic book history with the Titans, he is not as heavily associated with the team as prior Robins Dick Grayson and Tim Drake (the First and Third Robins, respectively). Grayson, in particular, is heavily associated with the Titans, having a romantic relationship with Starfire and becoming an independent team leader during his transition into Nightwing. While it is impossible to know for sure, it seems likely that Teen Titans could introduce us to the DCU’s Batman’s first Robin and his friends.
Teen Titans has just entered development. While it is currently unknown when this project will be released, it is one of the few announced DCU projects to have a writer attached. Perhaps it will be one of DC’s next priorities after the universe’s official debut when Superman releases on July 11, 2025.
