Announced last week, Sundance will open its 2017 film festival with the follow-up to the critically-acclaimed 2006 documentary An Inconvenient Truth. This new film will be directed by Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk.
When released in 2006, An Inconvenient Truth won the Academy award for Best Documentary and stirred up controversy about global warming. The film also won Best Original Song for Melissa Etheridge’s ‘I Need To Wake Up’. The film grossed $49.8 million worldwide.
It is not yet clear what specifically will be featured in this new film, given that the previous film followed Al Gore around the country as he gave presentations on climate change and global warming. Regarding the project, Gore suggested this is the final push for climate change advocacy, stating:
Now more than ever we must rededicate ourselves to solving the climate crisis, but we have reason to be hopeful; the solutions to the crisis are at hand.
To promote the film and the cause, Gore and Jeff Skoll (Chairman of Participant Media) will be featured as a panelist on Sundance’s ‘Power of Story’ panel, which is a collaboration between Sundance Institute and The Redford Center.
Cohen and Shenk have had a long relationship as documentary director and cinematographer, respectively. Cohen is most known for her 2006 documentary The Rape of Europa, for which Shenk was the director of photography. Early on in his career, Shenk worked as a documentary cinematographer for Star Wars Episodes I & II.
