The Sundance Film Festival is finalizing its film lineup as we approach the start date of Jan. 19th. The 2023 edition, the first being held in person since the start of the pandemic, added five feature films that will make their world premiere and brought back four award-winning movies from previous years that will be screened in person at the festival for the first time. These nine titles add to the 100-plus films being shown later this month.
Among those five new films heading to Park City is John Carney’s new picture Flora and Son, the Irish director’s first feature since Since Street was released in 2016. Also premiering is Earth Mama, which follows a single mother trying to unite her family in the Bay Area and Past Lives, about a Korean immigrant reconnecting with her childhood friend in New York City.
Madeleine Gavin’s Beyond Utopia will also screen in the U.S. Documentary Competition. And Stephen Curry: Underrated, a documentary about the Golden State Warriors point guard (produced by Ryan Coogler), will also show at a special screening.
Sundance’s Encore Special Screening will take place between Jan. 25th through the 27th. The four films added are Best Picture winner CODA (2022), Ukraine’s submission to Oscar’s foreign language film race Klondike (2022), Navalny (2022), and Best Documentary winner Summer of Soul (2022).
The festival’s Director of Programming, Kim Yutani, said “these five new films round out our program excitingly and emotionally. They are cinematic experiences that delight, entertain, and keep us on the edge of our seats. In addition, the works introduce us to new voices and directors we’re excited to welcome back to the Festival.”
The festival will take place from Jan. 19th to the 29th, with screenings in Park City and Salt Lake City.
