Warner Bros. was expecting to shoot their DC Cinematic Universe into orbit with Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. And while the film didn’t necessarily do poorly, its final box office tally (and poor critical reception) were not things to write home about. So WB is relying on David Ayer’s Suicide Squad to do big numbers when it hits theaters early next month. The film is doing well so far, having used fantastic marketing to show off its wild and colorful style. Which, unsurprisingly, may just pay off for everyone.
Despite its major second weekend drop, Dawn of Justice still garnered a huge $166 million domestic opening. Critics were one of the main reasons for the unusual change in numbers, so hopefully Suicide Squad won’t suffer the same fate. According to THR‘s latest reports, the film is tracking a massive $125 million opening weekend. Looking at the incredible amount of talent involved, not to mention the stellar footage we have seen, that figure could shoot even higher. If critics and audiences are pleased with it, then its theatrical run could go a lot longer than its predecessor’s did.
The Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) have been at the forefront of the marketing, which has intrigued both comic book fans and average moviegoers alike. Suicide Squad may have been a risky move at the outset, but it’s quickly become one of the most fascinating films of 2016. And with this massive box office prediction, the film could go on to be even more.
