Suicide Squad may be getting major makeover following the frosty reception of recently released Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The primary objective appears to be to add more humor and a more lighthearted attitude to the film. This comes as a result of the barrage of negative reviews for Batman v Superman, with a major complaint being that the film was too dark. Many people go to superhero movies with an escapist attitude, and the movie brought too much of the melancholia of reality to the table, according to some critics. In the case for Suicide Squad, despite the quirkiness of the most recent “Bohemian Rhapsody” trailer, source told Birth.Movies.Death. that “every joke in that movie is in the trailer,” insinuating that the movie would be similarly bleak.
This reshoots are set to be major ones, as “tens of millions of dollars” are being pumped in to fund the endeavor. This can be seen as both a good and a bad thing. On the one hand, they’re righting the conceived wrongs of the experiment that was Batman v Superman. If the entire DC Cinematic Universe carried that tone, it would undoubtedly fail and fizzle out within the next year or so. Bringing in this new tone gives the series a new chance and a clean slate. Perhaps these movies were better suited for the lighthearted campy vibe that most comic books give off.
On the other hand, in accordance with history, reshoots can go over really poorly. They’re usually at the decision of the studio/investors of the film, and can completely contradict the original vision of the director, in this case being David Ayer. The end result can be hodgepodge of conflicting tones, with things feeling very out of place, and scenes that don’t really make much sense in the context of the film. What ever the case, DC and Warner Brothers feel like it’s in their best interests to make these changes, and it could very well be their last chance to redeem the trust of the fans. The highly anticipated film brings together some of the most iconic villains in DC Comics history including Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Enchantress and, of course, The Joker. The film stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne, Jai Courtney and Oscar winner Jared Leto.
Suicide Squad is still scheduled for an August 5th release date.
