If all the reboots, remakes, and long-awaited sequels in development have taught us anything, it’s thats nothing is ever gone for good. Apparently that includes careers, as rumors have it that Steven Soderbergh (Magic Mike) is possibly returning to the director’s chair.
According to TheWrap, the director is attached to project called Logan Lucky, which has Michael Shannon (Midnight Special) and Channing Tatum (Hail Caesar!) in the starring roles. Initially, there were rumors that Soderbergh’s long-time collaborator Matt Damon (The Martian) was attached to the project but Soderbergh dispelled those claims on his Twitter account. Plot details are being kept under wraps for the project.
Soderbergh’s last film was the Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra which seemed like a guaranteed studio purchase given its cast and awards potential – Michael Douglas (Ant-Man) had recently survived battle with cancer. However, after it premiered at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, studios passed on the project which left Soderbergh disheartened with the studio system. The film went on to premiere on HBO and win two Golden Globes and countless Emmys. Since then, Soderbergh directed the the Cinemax series The Knick. He’s also producing the television adaptation of his movie The Girlfriend Experience for Starz. Soderbergh hasn’t stayed completely out of the film world, though, as he produced the sequel to his 2012 film Magic Mike, Magic Mike XXL.
