Steve Zahn on Board for Upcoming ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’

Joining actors Woody Harrelson (Zombieland) and Gabriel Chavarria (Freedom Writers), Steve Zahn (Dallas Buyers Club) has been added to the cast of 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes–the third film in the Planet of the Apes origin series. The film will also mark the eighth in the franchise’s official canon, not including the 2001 Tim Burton remake.

Zahn, who is also starring in this year’s Captain Fantastic, will be playing one of the apes. Although the plot is being kept a secret, we also know that Harrelson’s character will be a human named Colonel. Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings) will also return, yet again provide the motion-capture performance of the lead ape Caesar.

2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves is returning to the driver’s seat in the upcoming sequel, and Mark Bomback will also reprise his role in writing the script. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes earned over $700 million worldwide after opening in the summer of 2014. The reboot of the series started with the 2011 film Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which starred James Franco (127 Hours) and earned nearly $500 million at the worldwide box office.

War for the Planet of the Apes is scheduled to hit theaters on July 14, 2017.
