There are several mysteries surrounding Spider-Man: No Way Home, but one that seems more than solved is all that has to do with its villains. The entanglement that Peter Parker (Tom Holland) sets up with the multiverse to the desolation of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) could also push the MCU’s wall-crawler to hang with the versions of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, but, unlike the corresponding villains, these have yet to appear in any preview. This week the second trailer of Jon Watt’s film was released, where at least five villains with whom Spider-Man will have to fight were confirmed: Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, as well as the Green Goblin, the Sandman and the Lizard.
While the Sandman and the Lizard are currently CGI creatures that might not need the presence of the actors who played them in the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb movies (that is, Thomas Haden-Church and Rhys Ifans), it is confirmed that the Green Goblin that appears in the film is the one played by Willem Dafoe in the first Spider-Man movie. And it was Holland himself who confirmed it, during a Los Angeles event where the No Way Home trailer was screened. The actor took the opportunity to thank the fans for their support, and tell anecdotes about the film. Because, indeed, the cameos in question required a special way of filming.
Focusing on the villains (and waiting for Charlie Cox’s Daredevil to be confirmed at some point), Holland explained that the movie had to be shot very carefully to avoid spoilers, forcing these “guest stars” to come to set incognito. “There was actually a funny story about when I met Willem for the first time, because obviously at that time all of the villains in the film, it was a huge secret that they were in the film, so they would walk around set with these cloaks on,” the actor explained, as Screen Rant collects. “And, naturally, you know, these guys are very excited to be coming back and bringing these roles back to life, but they came to set a week before they started shooting to just see what it was like, meet Jon, meet myself, hang out on set and have a good time.”
“And I just sort of bumped into this guy in a cloak and was like, ‘Watch out, mate.’ And he took his hood off and I almost, like, got really scared. I was like ‘oh sh*t, the Goblin’s here!’ But he was lovely he was really wonderful and a real joy to work with.” Considering that Willem Dafoe is a man as capable of moving (his appearance in The Florida Project) as of terrifying (the rest of his filmography) Holland’s concern is certainly understandable. We will be able to see him fight against his great enemy Spider-Man (at least with one of them) once No Way Home opens on December 17.
