Sony missed the deadline to submit Spider-Man: No Way Home in order to be considered for the 2022 BAFTA Awards. All films must be made available to voters prior to the first round of voting, which ended January 4th; one noticeable box office hit was missing from the list.
The ongoing success of Spider-Man: No Way Home has led to many fans wondering if it will break the status quo and finally venture to what most superhero movies rarely see; the awards race. As of January 10th, the BAFTA Awards have made their decision, and no amount of campaigning from Sony will allow the film to be considered for an award.
BAFTA revealed that the film itself did not meet the establishment’s eligibility requirements and did not qualify for entry. The issue lies within the BAFTA View, the British Academy’s newest streaming platform, and the place in which films are made available to vote on by members.
Spider-Man: No Way Home was set to release on the platform by December 30th, giving voters only four days to meet the Jan. 3rd voting deadline. However, the film didn’t make the date, with Sony citing that there are “potential piracy issues as the film has not yet been released in some territories.” It is still not available on the streaming platform; the trailer remains in its place.
On the BAFTA View platform on January 10th, it states that: “As outlined in our rulebook, all films must be made available to voting members on BAFTA View prior to round one voting closing to ensure fairness and parity for all titles and the film was not made available by the distributor.”
Spider-Man: No Way Home has the honor of being the first film in BAFTA history to have been rejected for breaking this rule. The film longlists are set to be announced on Wednesday, January 12th.
