Into the Spider-Verse we go! Variety has got the exclusive scoop on what is happening with the sequel of Into the Spider-Verse. Sony Pictures Animations has a new trio of directors on board to direct the sequel. Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson will direct the sequel to the Oscar-winning animated film.
It has been previously reported that Dos Santos had already filled the directing role for the animated film, but it turns out the trio has been collaborating on the project from the very beginning.
“The crew behind the ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ set such a ridiculously high bar, and we’re humbled to take on the challenge of charting the next chapter in the story of Miles Morales,” the directing team said in a joint statement.
If not familiar with the work from the directors, they have a slew of movies under their belt. Sony Pictures Animation veterans Dos Santos and Thompson, whose feature directing debut to be the Spider-Verse sequel. Previous credits for Dos Santos include Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra and Avatar: The Last Airbender, and DreamWorks Animation’s Voltron: Legendary Defender, Warner Bros. Justice League Unlimited, and Teen Titans.
Thompson’s works include production designer for the first Spider-Verse, for which he won an Annie Award for the film. He was also a production designer on Sony Animation’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.
Current Oscar-nominee for best-adapted screenplay for the civil rights drama One Night in Miami, Powers works also include co-directing Pixar Animation Studios’ latest Oscar-nominated movie Soul, making Powers the company’s first Black director or co-director. Powers helped to write the first season of the CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery.
The theatrical release date for the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is expected for Oct. 7, 2022.
