Spider-Man has broken yet another record following the 2nd biggest worldwide box office opening weekend in history, with an approximate $930 million, but the film managed to beat out Avengers: Endgame for the highest domestic opening weekend with $360 million. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now taken the record for highest grossing Tuesday domestically, bringing home $42 million.
The film takes the crown from the 2nd film in Tom Holland’s first Spidey trilogy, which grossed $39 million on Tuesday, July 2, 2019. The film also earned the highest grossing Monday in domestic box office history, grossing $46 million. Destin Daniel Cretton’s film has become the fastest film to gross $400 million domestic, with the total currently $449 million as of Tuesday morning. Sony announced on Tuesday that the MCU’s 4th Spider-Man film became the 2nd fastest film to reach a billion, amassing the total in just six days.
The film stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, Trammell Tillman, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Mando, and Liza Colón-Zayas. Bringing Spidey back to a more street level story, something Tom Holland himself lobbied for after seeing fan interest, and focuses on Peter Parker where we last left him in Spider-Man: No Way Home, alone and unknown. Destin Daniel Cretton’s take on the web crawler has resonated with both critics and audiences alike, with the film holding a 90% with critics and a 98% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Marvel and Sony have already expressed interest in bringing back Cretton for the next installment of Spider-Man, with Marvel head Kevin Feige also stating that Tom Holland and Zendaya have earned a break. Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman also shed some light on his belief as to why the film has been so successful amongst a growing feeling of “superhero fatigue”.
“The press talks a lot about that, but right now, on anything, the theatrical audience demands greatness. If it’s only OK, they can stay home and see ‘only OK’ all day long on television. If we’re going to ask them make a trip out of it, it’s got to be great. The answer is as simple as that.”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently playing in theaters, with the film set to swing onto IMAX screens August 7th.
