Actor Christian Oliver and his two daughters died Thursday in a plane crash around the ocean off an island in the Caribbean. He was 51 years old.
With his real name, Christian Klepser, he left behind a prolific acting career. He starred alongside Cate Blanchett and George Clooney in Steven Soderbergh’s The Good German. He worked with Tom Cruise in Valkyrie and as Snake Oiler in the 2008 movie Speed Racer, the Wachowskis’ adaptation of the old animated series.
Oliver’s two daughters, Madira Klepser and Annik Klepser, were 12-years-old and 10-years-old, respectively.
Before Oliver’s passing, he completed his most recent project, Forever Hold Your Peace. Directed by Nick Lyon, Oliver wrapped his scenes on December 20th of last year. Lyon shared a tribute to the actor in a recent Instagram post.
Authorities reported that the plane took off Thursday afternoon from J.F. Mitchell Airport, carrying Oliver, his two daughters, and the plane’s pilot and owner, Robert Sachs. The airport is in Bequia, a small island of the St. Vincent and Grenadines. The plane’s destination was St. Luca.
As Deadline reports, the bodies of all four in the plane were recovered, but what caused the crash continues to be investigated. Local reports say that the pilot’s last communication was very shortly after taking off, stating he was turning back after.
“Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft experienced difficulties and nose-dived into the ocean,” a statement from the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force said. “Fishermen and divers from Paget Farm went to the scene of the incident in their boats to render assistance.”
