Sony Recruits ‘Spider-Man’ Tom Holland for ‘Uncharted’

Not quite 21-years-old, yet Tom Holland appears on the thrust of super-stardom. Last year, the English rising actor made splash as he debuted the latest cinematic iteration of Peter Parker to much fanfare and audience delight in the Marvel smash Captain America: Civil War. As we near closer to the MCU-Sony collaboration Spider-Man: Homecoming (due in theaters on July 7th), Sony appears anxious to attach Holland to what may be a second franchise for the studio with the video-game-to-film transfer Uncharted.

As Deadline reports, Holland is being sought to portray young Nathan Drake in a retrofitted adaptation of the PlayStation phenom. If plans come to fruition, the story – as first envisioned by by Sony chief Tom Rothman after he saw Holland in action in the latest cut of Homecoming – will serve as a prequel of sorts, introducing the would-be treasure hunter Drake, recalling his time as a growing thief. The story would also focus on how Drake was first introduced and later groomed by game mainstay Sullivan, a role for which no casting announcements have yet to be made.

Shawn Levy (Real SteelThis Is Where I Leave You) is slated to direct the project, one which has been priority at Sony for some time now. While Joe Carnahan (The Grey), David Guggenheim (Safe House) and Eric Warner Singer (American Hustle) have all at some point penned scripts for Uncharted, reportedly Sony will start from scratch and hire a new writer to fit the story, taking into account Holland’s youth. Charles Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner and Ari Arad will all serve as producers on the project.

The prospect of Holland leading the film comes as the young actor is very much in demand. He can currently be seen in theaters in the acclaimed arthouse feature The Lost City of Z (which stars Charlie Hunnam and Robert Pattinson) and headlines the aforementioned Spider-Man: Homecoming, heading to theaters this summer. This December, for quick about-face, Holland co-stars alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon in The Weinstein Company’s period bio The Current War. Currently, Holland is continuing Spidey duty with the currently filming Avengers: Infinity War and is next heading into production on Doug Liman’s dystopian sci-fi film Chaos Walking, in which the actor stars alongside Star Wars: The Force Awakens breakout and fellow UK rising star Daisy Ridley.

We we stay tuned on the latest surrounding Uncharted and the ever-busy résumé that Holland is quickly building.
