‘Sons of Anarchy’ Writer Kurt Sutter to Make Film Directorial Debut on ‘This Beast’ For Blumhouse and Netflix

The writer behind TV shows and movies like Sons of Anarchy, the spinoff Mayans M.C. The Shield, and Southpaw, Kurt Sutter will be making his film directorial debut in This Beast set by Netflix that he will write and produce as well. Blumhouse founder Jason Blum will produce the film.

The story idea was inspired by the true story of The Beast of Gévaudan, a mysterious and enigmatic beast that terrorized a French village in the 1760s. Dozens of innocents are slaughtered, and mayhem drives them to puritanical heights. The daunting mission of killing the beast falls to a lowly trapper who vows to stop the bloodshed. However, for him, it is not a professional mission; it’s a deeply personal one that drives him.

Sutter told Deadline, “Bringing my disturbing, familial story sensibility into the Blumhouse world just seemed like something that had to happen. And This Beast is the perfect project for that marriage. And Netflix is the perfect venue for that bloody ceremony.”

Blum added by saying, “We’ve long been fans of Kurt and his unparalleled storytelling — that’s both visceral and packs an emotional punch,” Blum said. “We’re excited that Blumhouse is producing his first feature for Netflix.”

Sutter made his start with the crime, drama thriller TV series The Shield, about the lives and cases of a dirty Los Angeles Police Department cop and his unit.

Cassandra Reichelt: I graduated from California State University of Long Beach in Spring 2021 with a degree in Journalism major. I did attend Long Beach City College for a couple of years, I then transferred to CSULB in 2019. I want to write something outside the normal, something no one would think to write about in a unique way. It also shows how far I am willing to go to produce something amazing that will get more readers interested in the world of Journalism. I am on my way to making a professional life for myself.
