The inescapable Marvel machine is everywhere…and nearly unavoidable. With Captain America: The Winter Soldier lighting up the box office and that particular cinematic universe an unstoppable machine, rivals are doing their very best to match and better the juggernaut. Even rivals within the overall Marvel banner are trying to match up. Sony has announced that a spin-off to its Spider-Man franchise Sinister Six is a go, and it now looks like Drew Goddard may be the man behind the camera. Sony holds the rights to Spider-Man canon, one of the reasons why he and his collection of characters are nowhere to be found in The Avengers.
Several months back, Goddard was brought in to write a screenplay for Sinister Six, which would expand the rebooted Spider-Man universe as a vehicle that could serve to showcase many of the web-slinger’s most infamous villains. Reports are that Goddard is now up for the directing gig, too. Goddard, who cut his teeth writing for cult favorite television shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lost, previously directed the meta horror film The Cabin in the Woods and wrote the screenplay for Cloverfield. He also assisted in the cleaning-up of Brad Pitt’s zombie hit World War Z. Expanding his superhero bonafides, Goddard is also set to produce a new installment of Marvel’s Daredevil for Netflix.
Sony also has another Spidey villain film rearing to go – Venon, an updated take on another Spider-Man foe that was introduced in Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Ed Solomon have been drafted to script, with Kurtzman directing. Meanwhile, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the second go for Andrew Garfield’s reboot of the superhero tale, is set to open in theaters on May 2nd.
