Shailene Woodley Attached to Star in ‘Adrift’

Announced on Tuesday, Shailene Woodley will star in Adrift as Tami Oldham, a 23 year-old women who, while on a sailing trip with her fiance in 1983, was forced to find her way home after he was thrown from the boat during a hurricane. The film is set to be directed by Baltasar Kormakur.

In 1983, Tami Oldham and her fiance Richard Sharp set out to deliver a 44-foot yacht, called ‘Hazana’, from Tahiti to San Diego. When a hurricane struck, Tami was knocked unconscious, and Richard was thrown from the deck. When Tami awoke, she was 1,500 miles from the nearest land, with the boat and its instruments in shambles. Despite the circumstances, Oldham survived by sailing for 41 days until she reached the coast of Hawaii.

Kormakur, an Icelandic director/writer/actor, most recently directed the epic adventure drama Everest in 2015. He first received international acclaim in 2000 for his film 101 Reykjavik. At the time, Variety selected him as one of the ’10 Directors to Watch’, alongside Alejandro González Iñárritu, Christopher Nolan and other new filmmakers. He remains one of the greatest Icelandic filmmakers of his time.

Writers, newcomers Aaron and Jordan Kandell, are brothers/twins originally from Hawaii, and most recently were part of writing team that brought us Disney’s hit animated feature Moana.

Woodley can be seen this year in Oliver Stone’s Snowden with Joseph Gordon Levitt, and she recently made the news for being arrested for protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline. She recently finished filming HBO’s miniseries Big Little Lies, which will premiere in spring 2017, alongside Nicole Kidman, Reese Withserspoon, Zoe Kravitz, and Alexander Skarsgard. She is also attached to the romantic comedy No Baggage. There is still no official word on whether she will be signing on to Ascendent, the final televised installment of the Divergent series.
