See the Unnerving First Trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s ‘mother!’

The first trailer for mother! looks as though filmmaker Darren Aronofsky is looking to push the boundaries of psychological horror even further than what he was able to accomplish with 2010’s Black Swan or 2000’s Requiem for a Dream.

Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem as a couple in domestic bliss, their world is turned upside down when two strangers, played by Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer, visit their home. When it is revealed that the strangers may have a connection to Bardem’s character, things seem to take a sinister turn.

Little hints that the trailer gives us come when Lawrence says “I want to make a paradise” and later when Bardem says “I just wanted to bring life into this house”. Basing our previous knowledge of the film being called mother!, it is clear that this film is going to be Biblical in nature, with “paradise” likely referencing the Garden of Eden, but with a dark and twisted bend. There is also something mysterious in the basement, but we’ll let you speculate on what that might be. If the trailer is any indication, Aronofsky’s film will in the very least be a disturbing and skin crawling experience for audiences.

mother! will also feature performances from Domhnall Gleeson and Kristen Wiig. The film hits theaters on September 15. See the trailer and brand new poster below.
