It is shaping up to be a busy year for director Edgar Wright. His documentary The Sparks Brothers is set to release in theaters later this summer. In addition to this, his upcoming psychological horror film, Last Night In Soho, whose trailer was just released Tuesday from Focus Features, who is distributing both films.
Here is the official plot synopsis:
“Edgar Wright’s psychological thriller about a young girl, passionate in fashion design, who is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer. But 1960s London is not what it appears, and time seems to fall apart with shady consequences…”
This is a bit of a change of genre for Wright, whose previous films such as Baby Driver and Hot Fuzz have leaned more to the action/comedy genre.
The film was originally set to release back in 2020, but due to the pandemic was pushed back until October 2021. When speaking to Indie Wire Wright spoke about how he did not mind the film’s delay, preferring it to be seen in theaters, which is a conclusion he alongside Focus Features and Universal settled on.
“They feel as well that we want to at least give it the chance to be in theaters and see it as it was intended to be.” Wright said. “Obviously people will be able to watch it at home eventually. I saw a headline that said, ‘”Soho” Delayed for Second Time to October,’ but the more positive spin is ‘”Soho” to Be in Theaters.’ That’s how I see it. I’d happily wait if there’s a chance to see it on the big screen because that’s how it was made to be seen. I, along with the rest of the planet, hope for the vaccine to gather momentum.”
The film will star Thomasin Mackenzie, Ana Taylor Joy, and large supporting cast including Matt Smith, Terrance Stamp, Rita Tushingham, and the late Diana Rigg. The script has been helmed by Wright and Krysty Willson-Cairns.
Last Night in Soho will be released on October 22, 2021 exclusively in theaters.
