Scarlett Johansson Cast in Apple & A24’s ‘Bride’

Scarlett Johansson in Lucy

Scarlett Johansson has been cast in the upcoming genre-bending riff on the classic Bride of Frankenstein character, Bride. The film is the latest collaboration between Apple and A24, and will be directed by Oscar winner Sebastián Lelio.

The logline for the film reads: A woman created to be an ideal wife — the singular obsession of a brilliant entrepreneur — rejects her creator, and is forced to flee her confined existence, confronting a world that sees her as a monster. It is on the run that she finds her true identity, her surprising power, and the strength to remake herself as her own creation.

The film is being penned by Lelio alongside Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo. Blum and Angelo also wrote the upcoming Blumhouse film, Wolfman, which will star Ryan Gosling.

“It is long overdue for Bride to step out of the shadow of her male counterpart and stand alone,” Johansson said. “Working alongside Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum, Sebastian and I are extremely excited to emancipate this classic anti-heroine and reanimate her story to reflect the change we see today.”

Johansson will also star in the MCU film Black Widow. The movie was originally set to come out last May, but the pandemic has caused the highly-anticipated action film to be pushed back an entire year, with a new release date tentatively set to May 7, 2021.
