Brooklyn, the period romance starring Saoirse Ronan (Hanna), had a prosperous coming-out at Sundance this year, quickly getting picked up by Fox Searchlight in the process. The indie distributor has set a theatrical release for the film in the thick of the awards season on November 6.
Based on the novel by Colm Tóibín, the film was directed by John Crowley (Boy A) from an adapted script by Nick Hornby (An Education). It follows an Irish immigrant in 1952 America trying to make a better life for herself and her family while being torn between the love of two men – played by Domhnall Gleeson (Unbroken) and Emory Cohen (The Place Beyond the Pines).
Some of Fox Searchlight’s acquisitions from 2014 – The Grand Budapest Hotel, Wild, and Birdman – picked up booming recognition during awards season, including Birdman’s Academy Award for Best Picture. Their efforts on behalf of Brooklyn and its fall release could therefore bode well for the indie film’s award prospects.
