On Thursday morning the nominations for the 27th annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards were announced. Actors Daveed Diggs (Snowpiercer) and Lily Collins (Emily in Paris) announced the nominations via livestream on @sagawards’ Instagram. Diggs himself received a nom for outstanding performance in the television movie category for Hamilton.
In the theatrical motion picture categories, Da Five Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, One Night in Miami, Hillbilly Elegy and Minari claimed prominent spaces for their actors’ respective performances. Chadwick Boseman posthumously broke the record for most nominations at a single SAG Awards with four. In Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, he received a nom for Outstanding Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as Levee and Outstanding Performance by a Cast. Viola Davis earned a nom for her performance in the title role of Ma Rainey, as well.
Boseman also received Supporting Actor and Outstanding Cast Performance for Da 5 Bloods, directed by Spike Lee. Such an achievement comes with a bitter sweet taste after the talented actor passed away in August 2020 from cancer. Many fans wonder how the beloved star will be honored during this awards season, as he still holds a presence as a major contender even after his untimely death.
Amongst the other motion picture nominations there were some surprises while others were expected. Many ‘Walking Dead fans are pleased to see the recognizable face of Steven Yeun make the short list for his role in Minari which picked up two more noms for Yuh-jung Youn in Outstanding Supporting Actress and for overall Cast.
Some were surprised to see the film Mank represented in only one category for Gary Oldman in Outstanding Actor in a Leading Role. SAG nominations announcer Lily Collins, also in Mank, did not make the cut. Sasha Baron Cohen received a Supporting Actor nom for The Trial of the Chicago 7 (also Outstanding cast for the film), but his comedy co-star in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm Maria Bakalova represented the film for her supporting role as Tutar.
Voting will begin on February 16th for select guild members. The 27th Annual SAG Awards premieres live on Sunday April 4, 2021 at 9 PM ET/6 PM PT on TNT and TBS networks. See below for the list of Motion Picture Nominations:
