After the Golden Globe nominations were announced, many actors and industry workers took to their personal social medias to give thanks. Sacha Baron Cohen was nominated three times, but two were for his performances in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and The Trial of the Chicago Seven.
He congratulated his co-star Maria Bakalova, who steals the show in the film streaming on Amazon Prime now. In addition he wants to hire his other co-star Rudy Giuliani in case he does not win. It is a clear dig at a former United States President, but that aside, Baron Cohen should definitely win for one of those performances. And yes, it should be Borat again.
During the 2007 awards season, Baron Cohen took home Best Actor at the Golden Globes for his portrayal of Borat. Fourteen years later, the English comedian, actor, and writer could win once more. This time it is not only the character that is still so perfect, but it is what he does in the film. Throughout the runtime of the subsequent movie-film, Baron Cohen is balancing a different type of Borat, while keeping it just as entertaining.
He is outlandish, wild, and funny, but he is also sweet in some scenes. His arc with his daughter, played by Bakalova, is a wonderful watch, and carries the film, in my opinion, to greater heights than the first. Baron Cohen is not only balancing the sweet and fun of Borat, but also other characters that Borat must inhabit.
Due to the popularity of the character, Borat had to go incognito for most of the film. So Baron Cohen is now, for lack of a better term, a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude, which has led to Oscar nods in the past.
However, through it all, Baron Cohen has created one of the most unique characters ever created in film history, and the second time around did not disappoint at all.
Let’s just hope Baron Cohen gets some other nominations this time around.
