Sony’s long-awaited Resident Evil reboot finally has an official theatrical release date of September 3rd, 2021. This latest adaptation of Capcom’s survival horror video game series is said to be extremely different from Paul W.S. Anderson’s first set of Resident Evil movies, which included 6 installments but was not accurate to the PlayStation game. According to Screen Rant, this Constantin Films and Sony Screen Gems reboot plans change that, and stay true to the iconic video game series.
The film has been in talks since 2017, at one point even having James Wan attached, so now that release date is in sight, fans can finally get excited. Resident Evil will be directed by 47 Meters Down Johannes Roberts, who also co-wrote the film with Greg Russo. The film is set in 1998 Raccoon City and will star Kaya Scodelario (Maze Runner) as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) as Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell (Upload) as Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy) as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) as Leon S. Kennedy, and Neal McDonough (Yellowstone) as William Birkin.
Resident Evil doesn’t have an official title yet, but filming has already finished, so hopefully fans will get more information soon. The first 6 Resident Evil movies had extremely mixed reviews, with many critics loving it but hardcore fans of the Capcom games disliking it. Only time will tell if the reboot will be better received by both fans and critics. Either way, Resident Evil fans have a lot to look forward to in 2021, as aside from the reboot, the eighth installment in the video game series, Resident Evil Village, launches in a few months.
