Rumors Circulate Surrounding Tom Hardy as Elton John in ‘Rocketman’ Biopic

Tom Hardy and Sir Elton John

Tom Hardy is supposedly being considered to portray Sir Elton John in the musical biopic Rocketman. Hardy’s filmography is teeming with beefed-up, hypermasculine roles, such as his portrayal of British prisoner Charles Bronson in Drive-director Nicolas Winding Refn’s Bronson, thus making rumors of the actor as a choice for the role of John unexpected. A Christopher Nolan favorite, Hardy is best-known for his roles as Bain in The Dark Knight Rises and Eames in Inception.

Rocketman was penned by Billy Elliot and War Horse writer Lee Hall and will be directed by Michael Gracey. Gracey’s career thus far has mostly consisted of commercial work, and Rocketman will be his feature-directing debut. Song and dance is hardly foreign to Gracey, however; he is also set to direct Fox’s The Greatest Showman on Earth with Hugh Jackman. Many of Gracey’s commercials have featured choreographed dances – his Evian “skating babies” advertisement was a web-sensation – making him a good choice for the musical biopic, which is set to include “fantastical” dance sequences. The film will focus on John’s journey to becoming a global icon that went on to sell more records than most artists of his era.
