Even though Independence Day: Resurgence has only recently hit theaters, Roland Emmerich is already lining up his next project. The director seems like he enjoys staying busy, having had epic films such as 2012 and White House Down released just over the past few years. And while Independence Day 3 is also in the works, EW has announced that Emmerich is now attached to direct Universal’s Moonfall.
It tells the story of a group of unlikely heroes that are tasked with trying to save humanity after the moon suddenly falls out of orbit and hurdles towards Earth. This latest choice should sound pretty familiar to Emmerich fans, if not overly so. Moonfall was written by Emmerich, Harold Kloser and Spencer Kohen. Kloser has had a long partnership with the director, having scored many of his films as well as co-written/produced White House Down. There’s not many other details about the new project as of yet, although some of the production elements may depend on how successful Resurgence does over the next few weeks.
Until more details are announced about Moonfall, the film currently seems like a mix of 2012, Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia, and maybe a little bit of Spielberg. There is no release date for Moonfall, nor for Independence Day 3. So, hopefully we will find out more over the next few months.
