Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is officially the 4th Disney film of 2016 to pass the $1 billion global box office mark, joining Captain America: Civil War, Zootopia, and Finding Dory. The stand alone Star Wars film reached this peak during its 39th day of release.
Disney was the only studio this year to reach $1 billion. Last year, Star Wars: The Force Awakens took in over $2 billion, and while Disney was not expecting those numbers for their stand alone film, they were also pleasantly surprised with how well it did fare.
Rogue One is now the 28th film to pass the $1 billion mark globally, not accounting for inflation. It earned $512.2 million domestically and $499.1 million overseas.
Directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Felicity Jones and the series’ first ever Mexican-American lead, Diego Luna, the film has come long way since dire tales of re-shoots at the beginning of the year. The next “Star Wars Story” will be the Untitled Han Solo Origin Story starring Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, and Donald Glover.
