Robert De Niro and John Boyega To Star in Netflix’s ‘The Formula’

Gerard McMurray, who directed The First Purge (2018) and Netflix’s Burning Sands (2017), has made his return to the streaming platform to direct The Formula, and actors John Boyega and Robert De Niro to star, Dateline confirms. McMurray is a bit of a groundbreaking director, as Burning Sands was one of Netflix’s first original films. McMurray will write, direct, and produce the film with his recently formed production company Buppie Productions.

Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro and Berry Welsh will also produce. The film will tell the story of a Formula One racing prodigy who is forced to become a getaway driver to save his only remaining family.

Boyega, known for his roles in the Star Wars sequel trilogy and Detroit most recently starred in Steve McQueen’s acclaimed anthology film series Small Axe starring in the Red, White and Blue installment. This will be De Niro’s return to Netflix following his work in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, alongside Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. Boyega is repped by Identity Agency Group, De Niro is repped by CAA and McMurray is repped by WME and Artists First.

There is no official release date yet, but most likely not until later this year at the earliest.
