Ridley Scott Wants To Finally Make His First Western

Ridley Scott has made just about every kind of movie during his long career, but there is still one major genre he has yet to fully tackle: the Western. The director recently revealed that he is still trying to make one happen. According to ScreenRant, Scott wants his next big change of pace to be a Western. The filmmaker already has a script and has been trying to get a studio on board, but finding someone willing to take the chance on the project has been difficult.

Scott’s interest in the genre is especially interesting because he has never directed a traditional Western. His 1977 debut film, The Duellists, was a period drama set during the Napoleonic Wars, while movies like Thelma & Louise have included some Western influences. Still, Scott has never made a movie that fully fits the Western genre. The director has previously been attached to Wraiths of the Broken Land, an adaptation of S. Craig Zahler’s brutal Western novel. The project was announced years ago with Scott set to direct and Drew Goddard writing the screenplay, but it never made it to the big screen.

Now, Scott appears to be looking at a different Western for his next project. He recently said he has given the script to someone in hopes of getting the project moving, suggesting that he is still working to find a studio willing to back it. Scott has certainly shown that he isn’t slowing down. His latest film, The Dog Stars, is another genre change for the director, following a post-apocalyptic story starring Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley and Josh Brolin.

Whether Scott can finally get his Western made remains to be seen. After nearly five decades behind the camera, though, it would be pretty fitting for the director to finally add a Western to his filmography.
