Richard Armitage, likely best known for his role as Thorin in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy, has grabbed a role in the upcoming girl-powered Ocean’s Eight spin-off. Gary Ross (Pleasantville) directs this feminine slant on franchise popularized by Steven Soderbergh’s recent all-star trilogy, itself a reboot of the Rat Pack staple. Ross co-scripted the film alongside Olivia Milch. Deadline was the first to report this story.
While Armitage’s role in the film is unknown as of now, the veteran of film, stage and screen joins the fun alongside an illustrious ensemble cast. Oscar winners Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett lead along with Oscar winner Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, recent Emmy and Golden Globe winner Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter. There’s dudes in the movie too – James Corden, Damian Lewis and a cameo appearance from Matt Damon have also been confirmed.
Armitage was last seen in Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass and appears in the television show Berlin Station. He recently had a six-episode arc on the cult fave Hannibal as Francis Dolarhyde (a character portrayed by Ralph Fiennes in Red Dragon, for Hannibal Lector enthusiasts) and starred in the 2014 found-footage disaster thriller Into the Storm.
Ocean’s Eight arrives in theaters on June 8, 2018.
