Back in 2001, director Steven Soderbergh wowed audiences with the remake of the 1960s classic, Ocean’s 11. The original featured the members of the Rat Pack, while the remake showcased the talents of Hollywood stars like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Casey Affleck. But in recent years, the want for female-led films has grown bigger and bigger. It’s not only a righteous change for cinema, it’s also very appealing to contemporary audiences. And one of the most exciting female-centric projects is the upcoming spinoff of Soderbergh’s film, currently titled Ocean’s Ocho.
The stories in Soderbergh’s trilogy focused on a ragtag team of thieves who ripped off casinos in Las Vegas. And the spinoff/sequel appears like it will follow a similar path, but it will instead have an all-female team. The film already has Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, and Rihanna confirmed to star. And according to Deadline, Sarah Paulson is now in talks to join the cast. Known best for her performances in FX’s American Horror Story anthology series and the Oscar-winning 12 Years a Slave, Paulson has become a rare talent that stretches across both film and television. If she were to board the spinoff, it would be hard to think of way that Ocean’s Ocho could fail.
Not only that, the film is being helmed by director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit). He’s a good person to take on the project, particularly because there will be plenty of cynics out there who will believe a spinoff like this isn’t necessary. Paul Feig’s all-female Ghostbusters was hit with overwhelming criticism, so let’s cross our fingers that Ocean’s Ocho will prove those people wrong.
Ocean’s Ocho does not yet have a production or release date, but we will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
