Tom Hardy’s Capone has been available online since May, receiving mixed to negative reviews, with audiences being left feverishly divided. To say that director Josh Trank’s latest film wasn’t the career revival he was hoping for would be an understatement, but the film still has some interesting production tidbits that would peak the curiosity of any movie fan.
Trank, recently sat down with THR to talk about his new film and the advice he received while making the unique venture, “Everybody [from Rian Johnson to Joe Carnahan] was like, ‘There are areas where you could be weirder. If you’ve already gone this far to make a movie this weird and this unexpected, own it. Own your shit.”
Trank knew that his movie wouldn’t be for everyone and doubled down on making the movie pull no punches and push into the weirdness of it’s real life story. The film follows Al Capone in the later years of his life as he’s dying of syphilis, soiling himself, and losing his mind, leading to a strangely delightful Tom Hardy performance.
Unlike his previous critical and commercial failure, The Fantastic Four, Trank isn’t backing away from his latest work, taking acclaimed director Rian Johnson’s advice to heart.
