Judy, starring Renée Zellweger, has made an astounding $3 million at the box office this weekend. Although this number may cower in comparison to, say, a Marvel movie, the film was only open in 461 theaters across the United States. This amounts to the film having the highest average screen total with $6,705 being made in each theater. Judy still seems to be bringing in audiences long after the late Judy Garland’s passing.
The film is set primarily in 1969 in Britain, the same year The Wizard of Oz star Judy Garland died of an accidental barbiturate overdose at the age of 47. It follows her five-week run at the nightclub ‘The Talk of the Town’ as she deals with the pressures of being an aging star and mother while battling her lifelong drug and alcohol addiction.
Also starring in Judy is Jessie Buckley as Rosalyn Wilder, a production assistant who worked with Garland, Finn Wittrock as Mickey Deans, Garland’s fifth husband, Rufus Sewell as Sidney Luft, Garland’s second husband, and Michael Gambon as Bernard Delfont, a theatrical impresario, and Bella Ramsey as Lorna Luft, Garland’s daughter. The film was directed by Rupert Goold and its screenplay was written by Tom Edge.
