To no one’s surprise, Universal has announced plans for a sequel to this summer’s monster hit Jurassic World. The studio’s target date for the follow-up to what is now the number-three top grossing film of all time is set for a June 22, 2018 release.
The film will reunite World‘s stars Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Bryce Dallas Howard (The Help) as raptor-whisperer Owen Grady and theme-park manager Claire Dearing. Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly (co-writers on the upcoming Dreamworks project Intellegent Life) will repeat their screenwriting duties from the first, but it appears unlikely Trevorrow will reprise as director as well. Stephen Spielberg will, however, return as executive producer, joined by Frank Marshall as a producer.
Jurassic World‘s gargantuan success at the box office this summer caught many off guard. The film surprised with the highest opening weekend take in history (taking the top spot away from 2012’s The Avengers) and has so far earned a staggering $1.5 billion worldwide. Outpacing the much anticipated Avengers: Age of Ultron was a quite a coup, yet Jurassic World has also put the pressure on for Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens on terms of yearly bragging rights.
