Regina King Goes For The Presidency In ‘Shirley’ Trailer

During the 1960s, Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman to be elected into Congress and in 1972 she became the first Black woman to make a serious run for President of the United States, according to Netflix’s Tudum

It is that presidential run and the struggles Chisholm faced that will be the main focus of Netflix’s new film Shirley, starring Regina King (Watchmen, The Boondocks).

The trailer for the film has just been released, showing off King’s ability to portray the late politician and showing a range of Chisholm’s personality, from witty retorts and people being sarcastic with her to existential thoughts and reflection on the struggles faced during the campaign.

While there are some bone-chilling moments in the trailer, such as Chisholm barely avoiding a stabbing from a white man, it still does show the main point of the film, which is the inspiration and determination Chisholm had to change the U.S. for the people she loved.

With the trailer also came the film’s cast. Actors include Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea, Lady Bird), Brian Stokes Mitchell (Evil), Christina Jackson (Devotion), Dorian Crossmond Missick (Southland), Amirah Vann (Arcane), André Holland (Moonlight) and Terrence Howard (Empire).

The film also stars the late Lance Reddick, this is one of the final projects that he was able to film before his death last year. John Ridley, known for executive producing films such as Ben-Hur and 12 Years a Slave, wrote and directed Shirley

This isn’t the first time nor will it be the last time Chisholm will be portrayed in film. The Hollywood Reporter noted that Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black) also played Chisholm in Hulu’s Mrs. America in 2020 and Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead and Black Panther) will be playing her in the upcoming biopic The Fighting Shirley Chisholm.

Shirley will be released on Netflix on March 22, 2024, and is rated PG-13.
