Reese Witherspoon is Ready for ‘Legally Blonde 3’

It turns out audiences may not have seen the last of Elle Woods, particularly if Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line) has anything to say about it.

The actor recently appeared on the Lifetime talk show Fashionably Late with Rachel Zoe where she was asked about the possibilities of a Legally Blonde 3. While there aren’t any definitive plans for a sequel, Witherspoon said she felt that now would be an opportune time to check in with Elle Woods, Harvard Law class of 2004.

A lot of writers over the years have come up with  different ideas for it. I actually think its kind of great right now because we’re talking about women in politics and how important that is.

Of course, the last time we saw Witherspoon’s character was in 2003’s Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde where she went to Washington D.C. to join the staff for a congresswoman working to pass a bill to ban animal testing, so it would make sense that the character stayed in our nation’s capital.

There was a third film in the franchise, the straight-to-video spinoff Legally Blondes that followed Elle’s younger cousins (Milly and Becky Rosso, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody) as they moved from England to California. Witherspoon didn’t appear in the film.

Witherspoon admitted in the interview that she doesn’t have much of a say in getting the project started as that belongs to MGM. Witherspoon’s readiness to dive back into the character definitely helps the possibility that we’ll see a new Elle Woods adventure again.

While Witherspoon has definitely been busy as a producer on projects like Gone Girl and has earned critical acclaim for her performances in Mud, Inherent Vice, and Wild, she hasn’t had box office hit in a while. Her latest film Hot Pursuit with Sofia Vergara (Chef) failed to make back its budget domestically. In the meantime, Witherspoon is re-teaming with Alexander Payne (Election) for the comedy Downsizing and will star in the upcoming Paul Feig (Spy) comedy Wish List.

We’ll be sure to have more on a potential Legally Blonde sequel as (and if) it develops. You can watch the aforementioned interview below.
