Rachel Weisz in ‘Black Widow’

The appetite of Marvel and film fans for a Black Widow superheroine standalone film, who has been previously portrayed in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe by Scarlett Johansson, was building up for years. The project, so far known simply as Black Widow, has been in development for a bit of time now but had to work around Marvel’s current, prioritized projects such as the last two Avengers films.

For Black Widow to truly live up to its potential and satisfy moviegoers and diehard fans, it is going to need plenty of badass women lining the cast. That qualification is partially met if current talks with American-British actress, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite, The Mummy), are finalized and she is added to the cast.

The deal, precarious at present, would add Weisz into a role that is not known yet. There is plenty of mystery and unknowns surrounding this film, including the basis for plot (be it an origin story or post-Avengers: Endgame story). Weisz isn’t the only actor in talks for the film, as David Harbour (Stranger Things, Hellboy) is as well. Already confirmed for the project is English actress, Florence Pugh. An Australian film writer and director named Cate Shortland will direct. There are few confirmed details on Black Widow as everything remains in the early stages.

Robert Thornson Jr.: My name is Robert and I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of California Irvine. I am pursuing a B.A. in Film and Media studies with hopes to work in the creative industry. I have always had a passion for storytelling and since youth I've loved film. I grew up loving the movies of directors like Wes Anderson, Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, and many more along with writers such as Aaron Sorkin and Quentin Tarantino. One thing I have always done is write about movies and communicate to others information about the "film community" and the industry as well as about the films themselves. I write creatively on a daily basis.
