Could Tarantino’s next film be his last? The cult director has famously established his ten film plan, stating that he plans to retire from filmmaking after the release of his tenth film. With July’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood being his ninth, fans are awaiting an announcement of what could be Tarantino’s last.
However, the director’s attachment to a proposed R-rated Star Trek film this past year has kept audiences speculating as to whether he will direct the project. In an interview with Consequence of Sound, Tarantino states he may be “steering away” from the working on that film. After successfully pitching the concept to Paramount Pictures and longtime Star Trek director and producer J.J. Abrams in 2017, Tarantino took time off from the project to direct Once Upon a Time In Hollywood. Mark L. Smith, who previously penned 2015’s The Revenant, signed on to write the script.
Stating that he’s “taken the pressure off myself to make that last big voilà kind of statement,” the director was quick to add that he hasn’t had an official conversation with either Paramount nor Abrams regarding his role on the project. Tarantino also remarked, “there was a moment when I was writing and went, ‘Should I do this now? Should I do something else? Is this the 10th one?,” and wrapped up by expressing that he has “no idea what the story of the next one’s going to be. I don’t even have a clue.”
No official announcements have been made as for if this supposed tenth final feature from Tarantino will be an R-rated Star Trek, or if he will instead favor a smaller film.
