Yumi’s Cells, the smash hit Korean series, will be launching next month at the European Film Market (EFM) at Berlin as feature-length fully-animated film. The film, Yumi’s Cells: The Movie, is based on the popular webtoon of the same name. Locus Animation and Studio N are in charge of the film’s production. In addition, Barunson E&A have picked up the property’s international rights.
The storyline focuses on Yumi, an office worker, and the brain cells that control her emotions and actions, including cells like the Rational Cell, Emotional Cell, and Love Cell among others.
Back in 2021 and 2022, Yumi’s Cells was made into a combination live-action/animation TV series for Korean streamer Tving and helped launch more international recognition for the show’s main star Kim Go-eun. The show had a 28-episode run over two seasons. Before this TV launch, however, it should also be noted that the original webtoon was extremely popular with an average user rating of 9.9 out of 10 and a total of 3.2 billion views.
The head of Barunson E&A’s international business unit, Sylvie Kim, said of Yumi’s Cells, the following: “We are delighted to add the feature animation adaptation of Yumi’s Cells, a globally beloved IP, to our sales lineup. We plan to consistently introduce original and powerful content without limiting ourselves to specific countries, genres, or formats.”
