“Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me.” Johnny Depp is returning to his flagship franchise next summer, reprising his role of Jack Sparrow for fifth time. Disney has introduced the first teaser trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales; the tease premiered this evening during the season finale of Fear the Walking Dead. The handsome first look at the latest entry in the series is fully of ominous imagery and ghoulish visual trickery, yet is missing one notable thing: Jack Sparrow himself.
Instead, we get our first glimpses of Captain Salazer, the ghostly and terrifying villain of the piece, portrayed by Javier Bardem, how surely knows good villainy – see his Oscar winning take in No Country for Old Men and the 007 entry Skyfall for recent examples. Salazer, in the swath of battle, has one thing on his mind: finding Jack Sparrow and taking his out for good. Franchise neophytes Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (the Oscar nominated Kon-Tiki) take the reins of the franchise, directing this semi-reboot – the last film in the series was Rob Marshall’s 2011 entry Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Aside from Depp, who earned his first Oscar nomination for the first Pirates (2003) film, Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush (The King’s Speech) returns as Barbossa, as does Orlando Bloom as Will Turner (he sat out On Stranger Tides). The ensemble is rounded out by Brenton Thwaites (The Giver), Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner) and David Wenham (300). Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales hits theaters on May 26, 2017.
