This weekend’s D23 Expo brought fans some tidbits from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, a Disney property set for release in a little less than two years. The fifth installment in the Pirates series will see the return of Orlando Bloom in the role of Will Turner, the original film’s protagonist, who appeared in the first three movies. His involvement has been rumored dating back to last September, however, this is the first official confirmation from the studio.
Dead Men Tell No Tales will pick up on the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) as he searches for the Trident of Poseidon. He needs the artifact to give him the power of the sea and the ability to control the ghost pirates led by Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), who have escaped the Devil’s Triangle and are out to kill Jack as well as every other living pirate on the ocean.
It is not yet clear how Bloom’s Will Turner will play into the new plot. Unfortunately, unless they are keeping it heavily under wraps, Keira Knightley‘s Elizabeth Swann, whom Will unconventionally married in At World’s End (2007), will not be making a similar comeback.
The rest of the cast for Dead Men Tell No Tales will include Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner) as Carina Smyth and Brenton Thwaites (The Giver) as Henry, as well as David Wenham (300), and returning actors Kevin McNally, Geoffrey Rush, and Stephen Graham.
Norway’s Espen Sandberg and Joachim Ronning (Kon-Tiki) directed the film from a script by Jeff Nathanson (Rush Hour 2 & 3). Principal photography has been completed, and the filmmakers now have plenty of time until the July 7, 2017 release to put on the finishing touches. Check out the official logo for the film below.
