Paul King to Direct Prequel ‘Wonka’ as Warner Bros. release a date.

Filmmaker Paul King will be directing Warner Bros. Wonka, the prequel to Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, which will explore the early life of the infamous chocolatier. Warner Bros. have set a release date for Wonka, it will be hitting theaters on March 17, 2023. The studio will be focusing on “a young Willy Wonka and his adventures prior to opening the world’s most famous chocolate factory.”

The script will be written by Simon Rich who drew inspiration from Roald Dahl’s classic novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. David Heyman who produced Harry Potter will also be part of the team. The studio plans to start production in the upcoming four months according to Variety.

Warner Bros. are now eyeing Tom Holland and Timothée Chalamet to play young Willy Wonka. Originally back in 2018, the studio had its eyes on Ryan Gosling, Donald Glover and Ezra Miller but then decided they were not the big hitmakers they used to be.

Holland who is widely known for his role in Spiderman and Chalamet who has starred in Little Women in 2019, are part of Hollywood’s new generation of stars. It is unclear as to why Holland and Chalamet are in the running for the part, many see that Chalamet resembles a younger version of Johnny Depp, who was Willy Wonka in 2005. Although neither have been offered the role, casting either of these two men would bring in a bigger audience for Warner Bros. studios.
