Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen Will Not Appear in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’

After playing a crucial role in last summer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) has confirmed that neither he nor Magneto (Ian McKellen) will appear in X-Men: Apocalypse. Stewart was asked if he’d appear in the movie on Larry King Now. Stewart told King, “No. Nor Sir Ian McKellen either.”

Set in the 1980s, Apocalypse follows everyone’s favorite band of mutants as they face-off against Apocalypse (Oscar Issac). The younger versions of Professor X and Magneto (James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender) will appear in the movie along with Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, and Evan Peters as Quicksilver. Channing Tatum, who will be playing Gambit in his own movie that’s set to release October 7, 2016, is rumored to be making an appearance in the film as well.

Stewart and McKellen’s absence from the upcoming movie is a sign that the franchise is continuing to move towards the younger version of the characters that first appeared in 2011’s X-Men: First Class. If Stewart and McKellen aren’t returning to the movie, it would be safe to assume that the rest of the original gang – with exception to Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine – won’t be making an appearance either.

X-Men: Apocalypse brings back Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer and writer Simon Kinberg. The film is set to release May 27, 2016.
