Last night brought a new wave of SAG award winners into the new decade, and with it a handful of clues on who will take home the Oscar gold come next month. The most notable win was Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite scoring the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, being only the second foreign language film ever to do so.
Many of the night’s winners mirrored those of the Golden Globe just two weeks ago, with Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) and Renée Zellweger (Judy) taking home awards for Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress, respectively. Supporting Actress and Actor awards went to Laura Dern (Marriage Story) and Brad Pitt (Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood). It’s likely the Academy Awards will follow suit, with 21 of the past 25 year’s SAG winners winning the Oscar in the same category.
Despite having the most nominations of the evening, including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for Charlize Theron, and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for both Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman, Bombshell left the ceremony empty handed. The Irishman experienced similar luck, entering the night with four nominations but leaving with no awards.
To see if this year’s SAG award winners take home Oscar gold, the Academy Awards will air Sunday, Feb. 9 at 8 PM EST on ABC.
