Since earning an Oscar nomination for her performance in Alfonso Cuarón’s much lauded 2013 thriller Gravity, actress Sandra Bullock has maintained a fairly low profile. Currently, her voice talents are on display in the smash animated feature Minions but it’s her next film role that might be really intriguing. Bullock, who won an Academy Award for the 2009 drama The Blind Side, will star in the political comedy-drama Our Brand Is Crisis. Warner Bros. has just given the movie an awards friendly release date of October 30, 2015.
Based on Rachel Boynton’s 2005 documentary of the same name, Our Brand Is Crisis centers around the use of American political campaign strategies in South America. In the film- which was directed by David Gordon Green (Prince Avalanche, Pineapple Express) and written by Oscar nominated scribe Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy)– Bullock plays ‘Calamity’ Jane Bodine, a retired political consultant who is hired by an unpopular presidential candidate in Bolivia to help him win. Making matters worse is that Jane’s nemesis- a fellow consultant named Pat Candy (played by Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton, The Judge) is advising the opposition. Zoe Kazan (Ruby Sparks), Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker), Scoot McNairy (Frank) and Ann Dowd (Compliance) co-star.
Straughan’s script was featured on the 2008 Black List of the best un-produced screenplays. Our Brand Is Crisis feature top-tiered talent on both sides of the camera as George Clooney and Grant Heslov (Oscar winners for producing the 2012 fact-based drama Argo) are producing the project; Bullock also shares a producing credit.
Given its release date, it seems likely Our Brand Is Crisis may premiere at one of the fall film festivals. Either way, it’s planned for a theatrical bow on October 30, 2015.
